...you begin by loading the FEMM files into the simulation software and look at the design.

Next you open the spreadsheet (3.0 Works format) and notice how the FEMM files match the spreadsheet. There is an interactive process of running simulations in FEMM and then placing those results into the spreadsheet.

A comparison of these three controller options is made and the power required aerodynamically is also presented so that top speed can be estimated: (for flat land)

In order to estimate the "True Force" that the motor produces you need to filter out the effects of cogging and so you go through this process to determine the force using a RMS (root mean square) calculation:

...though I can't guarantee that this is going to work (haven't built it yet) it's what I'm working on.

my 1939 Colson 24"

i built this bike a few months ago from a pile of rust. it's got 24" Worksman wheels that i got from some old man for 50 bucks. they've got the old bendix coaster and an Atom front drum hub.

the power is provided by a Grubee Starfire GT4 66cc that's been modded pretty heavily.

the obvious distinction is the barrel's been reversed so the carb's in the front and the exhaust shoots out the back.

the head's been decked, intake manifold's been cut down for clearance and ported, exhaust's ported, carb's been polished inside and out, transfer case ports have been cleaned and polished, and that's all i can think of right now.

it's got a 30t steel motorcycle sprocket and a manic mechanic hub adapter.

this bike's got a lot of compression, and even without an expansion chamber or a better carb, it'll cruise 45mph all day, and i've "unofficially" been paced at 51.

i'm working on another project bike, and i hope to get 60+ out of it.

and some documentation, too.

howdy, my name's baird and i'm in southern california. some of you probably know me as "bairdco" from, y'know, other places.

i found this site because i was looking into Bonneville Speed Week, and how to enter, if not this year, then next.

i currently have a 66cc Starfire on a 1939 Colson 24" bike, and it's a screamer. been paced at 51mph. it's got a lot of modifications, not bolt ons, but engine work. the barrel's reversed, decked head, ported, polished, you name it.

don't have any concrete proof of my speed claims yet, but i will, soon.

i'm in the planning stages of building a full on race bike, and i've got a lot of crazy ideas, that just might not be all that crazy, once i figure out how to apply those ideas to the real world...

Hello MBRN Community,

I wanted to introduce myself; my name is Voneric Smith and I live in Tampa FL, where I was born and raised. Ive been happily married to my wife of 17 years and I am a proud father of four children. I have had the recent opportunity to acquire this forum last month and just like all of you, I completely enjoy building, riding and racing gas power bicycles.

My vision for this forum, and I hope that it will be shared by all of you, is to make it one of the top destination spots on the web for enthusiast and racers a like, so that we can all fellowship and share our motorized bicycle builds and projects within our own MBRN Community.

Please excuse the dust as the forum will be undergoing a remodeling and restructuring to modernize it as well as make the content relevant, so that it can better meet the needs of all our members. As we post new content, please feel free to join in as your input is very much appreciated and needed.

I have always had a deep love and respect for all forms of motorized racing ever since I was young up till now. In my teenage years, my uncle Steve, (Steve Leonard) was my idle when it came to car racing. He built a winning race car in the 1970s, the Dave Heinz Confederate Corvette. His car went on to race in the 24 hours of Lemans. His car and team won First in Class, making Corvette history. My uncle recently passed away, but the time I spent with him in his garage will last a life time.

My Dad also played an integral and important role in developing my love of the sport, for which Im very thankful. He would take me and the family every Friday night to watch Sprint Car Racing as well as the main dirt track events, which were held at the Golden Gate speedway here in Florida. My dad was also heavily involved in both Dirt and Speedway Kart Racing and became a highly valued expert in his field. He has owned some of the fastest karts ever raced.

One of my first direct racing experiences came from BMX Racing in the 70s and 80s along with Road Bicycle Racing. I would build my own bicycles and then take them to the track to race. I have always been competitive and as I won races, it kept me coming back for more.

Previously, I worked many years as a restaurant manager, but I have left the industry and have decided to follow one of my true passions in life, which is motorized bicycles and racing. One of my goals is to build the companion site to this forum where you will have access to our brand of custom, purpose built Racing Bicycles for sale; as well as information and links to other bicycle builders and specialized part vendors.

Motorized Bicycle Racing Network (MBRN) goals, is to help jump start this new and exciting sport, and to be your go to source for the information you need to either build your own Racing Bike i.e. Gas or Electric or find that needed part to complete your project. MBRN would also like to encourage members here to showcase their motorized projects and to share their building experience with others. Together, we can take Motorized Bicycle Racing to the next level and beyond.

Electric Bikes Need A Good Motor

As it is now the most common motor for ebikes is the brushed or brushless DC permanent magnet motor.

In order to get such a motor to work well within a power constraint (1000 watts) you are forced to do all kinds of things involving geardowns and multispeed gearing.

The thing I've been working on is an AC Induction motor that would be customized for the ebike and be able to deliver a wider powerband at lower rpm thus making a single speed ebike be able to deliver the maximum allowable power across the widest rpm range needed.

It's this sort of "base machine" that is lacking right now... anything with permanent magnets is going to need complex components and that drives up costs. Unless the sport is going to develop at a high cost level the need for low cost "appropriate" power is what is really lacking these days.

Before EBRR can become a sport it needs the machine to make it happen... and it's "not there yet" as they say...

Welcome to this fine but quiet site.
Are you going to be running at THE Salt Flats ?
Was that your ride showing 57 mph on the speedo ?
Let me ask, were you riding it ?
In case you have not been following things here it seems we may need a rider for a possible bike.
A person with the skill and courage to push a motorized bicycle beyond 50 mph nearing 60 mph impresses me.
Their input, knowledge, and skills should be welcomed.
Hope you will post.
Maybe this should be a PM.
WE members of the MBRA need to get something going for Sept 2009.
Listed the race days on the calander but do know if it got posted.
The rush of running the bicycles with engines and drive trains we tinker with and build is great. If it blows what the heck. its a hobby. It's suppose to be fun. Risks make life fun too.
Running something at the falts would be fantastic. Even to participate in any small way would be a real satiisfraction. What a week. The sites,smells,a memory that will last a life time.
Lets get something going.

Salt flats

Have been checking back for someone to get this MBRA on a roll for Sept 2009.
Is any one going to represent MBRA.
Augi said he would build but needs some bike parts. He has the engine. There are parts in all our shops I would bet. A Jockey size rider has not jumped forward. So why not the next size up.
There was a post on MBc letting us know we need to get the lead out and do something.
As I was unsure of classes I put a 80cc mid frame mount together. I see it has to be less than 50cc. That is OK most parts can be swapped with little modification.
There are a lot of folks here and I would like to hear what some are doing.
Let get some input into this.
Am going to try to make it to the Salt flats. Sometimes things come up though. Don't we all know how that goes.
Is there going to be a club bike or is it just run down and try to beat the champ ?
Seems if this gets going it will grow in the next few years.
With all the good folk trying to get rid of 2 strokes this could be a way to keep it going. May be the only place to ride will be there.
I'am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I will do what I can.
Plans need to be made.
By now there should be a plan. Reading posts it seemed like a lot of interest was in this.
How about some ideas of where were going and how.
Where do we start.
Fifty years ago my father had a old friend. Carl Club. I would listen to his stories in asmazement. Was told he once raced in the Indy 500. Asked dad did he win. He replied " doesn't really matter, he was in the race and that is what counts ". Turns out he was in it, not as the driver, but the rear view mirror. But he was in the 500 the big one.
I feel that way about the salt flats.
We can do this if we work together.
